Spanish police arrested a gang of British fraudsters who allegedly used a Gibraltar bank account to help them scam E400,000

"Spanish police arrested a gang of British fraudsters who allegedly used a Gibraltar bank account to help them scam E400,000 selling non-existent real estate in Turkey.

The gang operated on the Costa del Sol, as well as in Alicante and Turkey, and posed as property developers building top-end resorts in Turkey.

The scam was elaborate and the gang had prepared plans and offices in order to draw their victims in. They also worked with estate agents in the UK. “In this manner they would get their victims to pay important sums destined for the completion of the project into bank accounts in Gibraltar and Turkey,” the Policia Nacional said in a statement. The Spanish police did not identify the bank in Gibraltar and it was not clear last night whether the authorities here had been contacted for assistance with the investigation. They said the gang’s leader was arrested in Alicante but the investigation remained open and further arrests could not be ruled out. Numerous victims had been identified already – mostly foreigners living in Spain – but there may be more, the Spanish police added."

Crime drops across Andalucia for a second year running

Lonely Planet Andalucia (Regional Guide)Crime drops across Andalucia for a second year running: "The crime rate has decreased by 2.5% in Andalusia in 2010, in addition to a 5.36% drop in 2009. In particular, Granada stands, for the second consecutive year, as the third province with the largest drop in Spain.

He has also stated, during a meeting with senior police officers of the Police Headquarters of Granada, as well as provincial commissioner, together with those of Almería, Jaén and Málaga, and to which has also assisted the Government Delegate of Malaga , Hilario López Luna, 'that these four provinces will again see another reduction in crime this year'."

WikiLeaks cable: Americans tried to cover up death of Spanish journalist

WikiLeaks cable: Americans tried to cover up death of Spanish journalist: "Earlier this year, Spanish High Court judge Santiago Pedraz issued an arrest warrant to find and capture U.S. soldiers believed to have fired a tank's guns at a hotel for journalists in Baghdad, Iraq, that had been approved by the Pentagon as a safe haven for the press. Killed in the 2003 attack were a Reuters cameraman and Spanish journalist, Jose Couso.
Now comes a new twist to the ongoing controversy over the slaying in Spain via the trove of U.S. State Department documents recently made public by the WikiLeaks website.
Couso's family in Spain have launched a legal inquiry based on the U.S. cables, alleging possible collusion to cover up a potential war crime between Spanish and American officials. 'While we are careful to show our respect for the tragic death of Couso and for the independence of the Spanish judicial system, behind the scenes we have fought tooth and nail to make the charges disappear,' Eduardo Aguirre, an American ambassador to Spain, wrote in one 2007 cable posted by the El País newspaper. Then, just one month later, Aguirre told then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the Spanish government 'has been helpful behind the scenes in getting the case appealed.”"

Investing for Profit in the Russian Mafia States Stock Market, Goodbye Chinese Century? :: The Market Oracle :: Financial Markets Analysis & Forecasting Free Website

Investigating The Russian MafiaInvesting for Profit in theRussian Mafia States Stock Market, Goodbye Chinese Century? :: The Market Oracle :: Financial Markets Analysis & Forecasting Free Website: "//The Spanish Strategy to Combat the Russian Mafia: Follow the Money//
9. (C) Grinda traced the history of the Russian mafia in Spain to the mid-1990s, when several vory v zakone began to enter Spain. He said that since 2004 Spanish prosecutors have created a formal strategy to 'behead' the Russian mafia in Spain. He explained that this has been a top-down strategy done through extensive investigations of criminal actions by these vory v zakone living in Spain. These individuals have no known jobs and unknown sources of income, yet they live in large mansions. Spanish prosecutors have concluded that money-laundering is likely involved and the challenge has been how to prove this. Grinda says that Spain's longtime experience in fighting drug traffickers' use of money laundering has proven valuable in this regard.
10. (C) Grinda says the money-laundering investigations have a two-fold objective: to prevent the targets from profiting from the original crime and to prevent the targets from gaining enough clout to enjoy economic influence, which Grinda suggested sooner or later always reaches political power. This is why Spain's Attorney General has grouped together the prosecutors' office for anti-corruption and organized crime. As part of this strategy to prevent mafiosos from enjoying economic influence, Spain's strategy includes the seizure of businesses, companies, furniture and other assets."

WikiLeaks cables: Russian government 'using mafia for its dirty work' | World news | The Guardian

WikiLeaks cables: Russian government 'using mafia for its dirty work' World news The Guardian: "Spain conducted two major operations – codenamed Avispa (2005-07) and Troika (2008-09) – against mafia networks on its territory, resulting in the arrest of more than 60 suspects. They include four of the alleged leaders outside Russia: Gennady Petrov, Alexander Malyshev (Petrov's deputy), Vitaly Izguilov (a key lieutenant) and Kalashov. Despite this, the networks are said to have swiftly reconstituted.
On 13 January 2010 Gonzalez, a special prosecutor for corruption and organised crime, gave a 'detailed, frank' briefing to US officials in Madrid. In a classified presentation to a new US-Spain counter-terrorism and organised crime experts' working group he said the mafia now exercised tremendous control over sectors of the global economy.
He said Russia, Belarus and Chechnya – the Muslim republic of Russia run by a pro-Moscow president, Ramzan Kadyrov – were 'virtual 'mafia states' '. Ukraine was 'going to be one', he predicted. He spoke shortly before presidential elections in Ukraine won by the pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych. The country is now back under Moscow's sway.
'For each of these countries … one cannot differentiate between the activities of the government and OC (organised crime) groups,' Gonzalez told the US delegation.
His observations are likely to provoke a hostile reaction from Russia's political leadership and could lead to a serious diplomatic falling out between Russia and Spain.
Gonzalez said it was an 'unanswered question' to what extent Russia's prime minister, Vladimir Putin, was personally 'implicated in the Russian mafia and controls the mafia's actions'."

why Mersey criminals set up business on the continent - Liverpool Local News - News - Liverpool Echo

ECHO investigation: why Mersey criminals set up business on the continent - Liverpool Local News - News - Liverpool Echo: "IF you ever want to see the world, join Merseyside Police... It is not a line you will see in the police recruitment literature – when they were recruiting before the recent cuts – but a commonly-held opinion among those tasked with catching the region’s criminals.
Only two forces in the UK, Merseyside and the Met, have “level three capability” – the ability to fight organised crime on an international level.
It is a necessary tool in the fight against crime, as recent arrests right across Europe show.
Within the last six months, more than 45 Merseysiders were arrested on the continent or its surrounding islands for drugs.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Merseyside crooks pioneered what would later become international drug-dealing networks and came to be known by the authorities as the “Liverpool Cartel”.
They were the first to take a risk and go to countries which were the hub of drug production to forge direct links, cutting out the middle man and netting themselves tidy sums."

Brutal Gangs Terrorize Cyprus Online Gamblers | Casino Scam Report

Brutal Gangs Terrorize Cyprus Online Gamblers Casino Scam Report: "Gambling has always had a bit of danger attached to it whether doing it online or at any local casino, but danger takes on a completely new meaning if you live in Cyprus and gamble. Internet gambling is very popular in the country and it has made quite a few “business men” very wealthy. Some of these wealthy businessmen have even been considerate enough to “loan” out some money to other needy gamblers in exchange for just a “little extra cash”. However these generous businessmen are not very friendly when it’s time to pay them back when your late! Criminal Gangs are running rampant in Cyprus and brutalizing gamblers who owe them cash and can’t pay. They even go as far as holding people hostage, terrorizing them and taking personal items from their home while they wait for payments. Once the police have been involved, these terrorized people are too afraid of retaliation to make a statement to have these gang members arrested."

Contador's Lawyers Using Gasquet's Cocaine Defense - Sports News Story - WSB Atlanta

Contador's Lawyers Using Gasquet's Cocaine Defense - Sports News Story - WSB Atlanta: "Alberto Contador's lawyers are using tennis player Richard Gasquet's successful appeal against cocaine use as part of their own defense for a failed Tour de France doping test.
Contador's lawyer, Andy Ramos, told The Associated Press on Tuesday a decision in cycling's biggest case could come 'any day' as the Spanish cycling federation's disciplinary committee determines whether Contador deserves a two-year ban after testing positive for clenbuterol.
The three-time Tour champion says he ingested the muscle-building, weight-loss drug inadvertently through contaminated meat.
Contador's lawyers are using several cases relating to other athletes to highlight that Contador did not voluntarily take the drug. Contador will also lose his Tour title if he is found guilty.
Gasquet avoided a lengthy ban last year after the French player proved he inadvertently ingested cocaine after kissing a woman at a nightclub.
'Not one of the scientists we have worked with has said it couldn't have been anything but contamination,' Ramos said in a telephone interview. 'The levels are ridiculous - it couldn't be anything else.'"
